In recognition of World Cancer Day 2017, Fred Hutch Global Oncology highlights its recent contributions toward the fight against cancer, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, like Uganda, where the cancer burden is rising.
In Uganda, strengthening a partnership against cancer
Last November, Fred Hutch President and Director Dr. Gary Gilliland and Dr. Julie McElrath, Senior Vice President and Director of the Hutch's Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, visited Global Oncology program staff and collaborators in Kampala, Uganda where they also visited the state-of-the-art UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre. Gilliland praised the Ugandan doctors and other clinicians. "To see the dedication and devotion of health care professionals in caring for those patients under difficult conditions was compelling and inspiring," he said. "It was a stark reminder of how important it is to try to have an impact."
Following high-level meetings with government officials during this visit, the Ugandan government committed to increase funding to its public cancer institute, the Uganda Cancer Institute, by 25 percent.
