Fred Hutch President and Director Dr. Gary Gilliland and Dr. Carol Nakisige, a Uganda Cancer Institute gynecologist and obstetrician, confer last November at the UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre in Kampala, Uganda.

 

In recognition of World Cancer Day 2017, Fred Hutch Global Oncology highlights its recent contributions toward the fight against cancer, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, like Uganda, where the cancer burden is rising.

In Uganda, strengthening a partnership against cancer

Last November, Fred Hutch President and Director Dr. Gary Gilliland and Dr. Julie McElrath, Senior Vice President and Director of the Hutch's Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, visited Global Oncology program staff and collaborators in Kampala, Uganda where they also visited the state-of-the-art UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre. Gilliland praised the Ugandan doctors and other clinicians. "To see the dedication and devotion of health care professionals in caring for those patients under difficult conditions was compelling and inspiring," he said. "It was a stark reminder of how important it is to try to have an impact."

Following high-level meetings with government officials during this visit, the Ugandan government committed to increase funding to its public cancer institute, the Uganda Cancer Institute, by 25 percent.

The decade-plus partnership between the Uganda Cancer Institute and Fred Hutch celebrated a new milestone in 2016: The adult outpatient clinics for gynecological cancers and Kaposi sarcoma and the children's outpatient clinic moved into the UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre.

Fred Hutch and Seattle Children's win NCI 'provocative questions' grant

Drs. Corey Casper and Lisa Frenkel were awarded a $5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute's Provocative Questions Initiative to study the biologic mechanisms behind the higher risk of cervical cancer among women with both HPV and HIV.
