Uganda Cancer Institute-Fred Hutch Collaboration turns 10

Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) Executive Director Dr. Jackson Orem made a rare visit to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in June to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UCI-Fred Hutch Collaboration and reflect on the last decade's accomplishments. “Through cooperation and collaboration, by building capacity through training and technology transfer, with engagement with our partners and our government, we are showing that we can have a sustainable cancer program,” he said. “Despite the fact that we are collaborating with people who are living on the moon, we have shown that we can do some work on Earth.”

Researchers examine specimens in the histopathology lab at the UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre

Fred Hutch Global Oncology, in partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine, the Uganda Cancer Institute, the Government of Uganda, Mulago Hospital and Makerere University, in May announced the launch of a new model for global oncology training: the East African Adult Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program. This initiative will improve the care and treatment of adults with cancer and blood disorders, while building health care worker capacity and fostering the cross-sector collaboration essential to strengthening health systems. Global Oncology recently launched the “Global Oncology Pilot Research Initiative” to support its work in advancing cancer care in low- and middle-income countries. The call for the 2018 pilot awards focused on the exploration, development and/or evaluation of innovative methodologies for the diagnosis of cancer that are suitable for application in limited-resource settings. The recipients were principal investigators Dr. Jerry Radich of the Fred Hutch Clinical Research Division, and Dr. John Scheel of the University of Washington and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
