In Uganda: Treating twin threats of HIV and cancer
For
two pivotal years beginning in 1989, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellman lived in Kampala
studying HIV/AIDS and cancer at the Uganda Cancer Institute. This June, she
revisited the city and together with Dr. Gary Gilliland, walked through the
UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre, a world-class facility with a wonderful staff;
and it is a place where the link between infectious diseases and cancer is
witnessed daily.
Breaking down HIV exclusion in cancer clinical trials

For
reasons that date back to the earliest days of the AIDS epidemic, HIV-positive
people with cancer have often been excluded from cancer clinical trials. Now,
that may be changing. A new study led by Dr. Thomas Uldrick and other Fred
Hutch researchers showed that patients with HIV and one of a variety of
potentially deadly cancers could be safely treat with the immunotherapy drug
pembrolizumab, also known by its brand name, KEYTRUDA®. Read more »

Raquel Sanchez
Research
administrator, Raquel Sanchez, stepped into a new role within Fred Hutchinson
Cancer Research Center as managing director of Global Oncology on July 1. She
brings 20 years of research operations and management experience to her role,
supporting the Seattle- and Kampala-based teams of approximately 70 faculty and
staff, as well as provide strategic support to Global Oncology Head Dr. Hootie
Warren and Deputy Head Dr. Tom Uldrick. Read more »
