Our Story

Defeat Multiple Myeloma 2020

Mission: Possible

Welcome to our team page!

In October of 2018, my mother, Rita, was diagnosed with mulitple myeloma after a weird growth showed up on her jaw bone. At first, the oral surgeon believed it to be tooth related so she had to endure two root canals until she realized, "Wait, this bump isn't going away. It's actually getting bigger". Rita had it biopsied and the results came back as positve for cancer cells; something that no family wants to hear. Oncologists told Rita that eventually she would have to go through treatment but probably not for awhile, as she's younger than most patients and healthy compared to others. Fast foward to a year later.

She has three lesions in her bones. She has to go through treatment.

Amazingly, her body responded very well to the initial chemotherapy and she's getting ready for her transplant! Her team will be using her own stem cells (autologous) for the treatment so thankfully she will have a pretty fast recovery.

Unfortunately, not everyone finds out as quickly as Rita did that they have this cancer. I formed this team to support my mother and others who have multiple myeloma and to help fund research. As of now, it is not curable, but maybe one day it will be.

Please join me in a fun day of walking and running for research (dogs can join too!). If you cannot make it, you are more than welcome to make a donation of any amount; everything helps.

Stay hopeful,

Hayley

Please join us in this fight and increase our impact by making a donation to our team today; 100% of all funds raised will go directly to advancing multiple myeloma cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells found in bone marrow.  Normal plasma cells help the immune system fight disease, but when plasma cells become cancerous they grow out of control and can produce a tumor called a plasmacytoma.  If someone has more than one plasmacytoma, they have multiple myeloma.

Why support this event?

Defeat Multiple Myeloma’s mission is to raise awareness of multiple myeloma while supporting research that seeks to discover new treatments, improve the quality of life for myeloma patients, and ultimately find a cure for this devastating form of cancer. Funds from the 2020 Defeat Multiple Myeloma event will continue to support immunotherapy research and clinical trials at Fred Hutch which are using CAR-T cells and have shown very promising early results for patients.
