At 33, I was told "you have breast cancer". Those words had a HUGE impact on my life. I endured a double mastectomy, 5 really long months of chemotherapy, and 6 1/2 weeks of radiation. Cancer treatment is absolutely horrible - it is THE hardest obstacle I've ever had to overcome! The side effects - let's just say it's way more than hair loss and vomiting!
I survived cancer, but many others do not. In my lifetime, I've lost family members to this disease, and I lost several friends to cancer during and after my treatment. I live with the fear of cancer coming back - a third of all breast cancer patients will get cancer again. I have always been (and will always be) a happy and positive person, but a cancer recurrence scares me. It scares me a lot!
This year, I'm even more committed to Obliteride - a ride/walk event in Seattle that raises money to find a cure for cancer. As the nominated team captain for Amazon, I'm going to do as much as I can to get others to join our team and raise money to obliterate cancer!
All proceeds raised goes to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center - right here in Seattle! Fred Hutch is learning more about cancer prevention, diagnostics, and treatment - 300+ labs and projects are working to save lives by conducting innovative, high-impact cancer research! We're close, but there's no cure yet - 1 in every 2 men and 1 in every 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime.
Please join me in the effort to cure cancer!
