Help Find Cures for Kids Like Scarlett

Scarlett was always a healthy girl. She never caused us a moment’s worry until the summer of 2016 when she started to lose her balance. After Scarlett got ill over the 4th of July, the doctor’s diagnosed her with a simple stomach bug, but we knew something wasn’t right.

Everything escalated quickly when the doctors discovered a golf-sized tumor in her brain. After an immediate surgery, there were still fragments left in her brain and spine that started to grow back. Since then she has been through round after round of chemo while enduring the harsh, life-altering side effect of treatment. We know that we need better treatment options for Scarlett’s tumor so she can grow to live a happy, healthy life.

Through all this Scarlett has been brave. She has been an inspiration. She reminds me to be resilient and to fight. She reminds me that the current treatments for her condition are unacceptable, and we need to do more to make sure all kids fighting cancer have promising, curative therapies.

Thanks to Dr. Jim Olson, our family has been given hope that someday there will be treatments for kids like Scarlett, so that no family will have to endure failed therapies and lost hope. Dr. Jim and the Project Violet lab are advancing cutting-edge cures to make brain tumors more susceptible to treatment. Many brain tumors overexpress a protein called BCL-2, which allows some tumors to resist high levels of radiation and chemo. By targeting the BCL-2 proteins with drug therapy to inhibit expression, previously impenetrable tumor will be vulnerable to chemo and radiation. For the treatment of low-grade gliomas and other brain tumors that cannot be surgically removed, BCL inhibitors have a potential to improve the efficacy of treatment, and leave the body whole.

We believe that kids should have more effective, promising treatment options for even the toughest of brain tumors. This is our story, and the story of many families. Please donate in honor of Scarlett, and all kids facing cancer first-hand.
