Welcome to my fundraising page!

I’ve been volunteering as a healing music pianist at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) for 2 years now. The first time I heard a keyboard playing in the lobby back in 2014, I thought if I can get through my diagnosis of AML and on to a life saving stem cell transplant, I would love to play as a volunteer. Having been a piano teacher for more than 30 years, I had to give that up and retire early to get immediate treatment for leukemia.

Coming May 27th, I can be called a survivor on my 3 year anniversary. I have so many stories of interactions with people. The time that a woman was sitting in the lobby crying upon hearing bad news. She continued to stay and listen and when she left told me, “I feel better now.” The bone marrow transplant patient going home to Wisconsin, invited her choir director friend to sing “Edelweiss” with her in the lobby. Their lovely vocal duet brought applause from those on the first floor. The joy on the patient’s face as she realized the words she just sang “bloom and grow forever”...just like her stems cells did for her. A little girl came in to have a lab draw and came over by the piano. She was wearing a princess dress and heard the sound of “Beauty and the Beast” and she started to dance as only a little child can, totally uninhibited and loving that particular song.

It truly is a blessing to be able to give back with the gift of music at the SCCA. When they’ve saved your life it gives one a connection for life and I’ll play as long as I can because of the joy, peace and comfort it brings to so many.

On June 9th, at 3'clock, I will present music at my home. I am going to play some selections of pieces that I have played for patients at the SCCA. I welcome you to come and join us that afternoon. This event will be livestreamed via facebook for those of you who are distant friends and I encourage you to consider donating to Fred Hutch Cancer Research. I personally benefited greatly in the lifesaving trial nuclear medicine that saved my life. It prepared me for the possibility of having a stem cell transplant.

The following quote is one I hold dear,

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everybody loves music.”
