Mr. Harper was my 8th grade Latin teacher and he was the best. We spent the first day arguing over what the point was of learning Latin. By the end we were convinced of Latin's necessity. Sadly, he left the school because his wife got breast cancer.
I distinctly remember saying to my mom in the car, “I feel like we should do something.” She suggested sending a card but to me that felt pithy and unhelpful. I then got the idea to raise money and in 8th grade the only sellable skill I had was cooking.
I decided to make and sell pecan pies during Thanksgiving and donate the money to Fred Hutchison Cancer Research. The first year I was decently involved. Besides the conception of the idea I handled the cooking and grocery list aspect and my parents ran the orders and delivery a.
each year since then I have sold pecan and pumpkin pies to raise money for Fred Hutch. In total I have raised over $5000 for cancer research, which is much better than just a card.
Thank you for being a part of Sam's Pies and helping support aFred Hutch. Let’s make it possible for more people to move beyond cancer and live life to the fullest — meaning more happy milestones and many more reasons to celebrate.
