I’m supporting Fred Hutch because their researchers are working on the front lines of this pandemic, racing to understand and track the virus, improve testing, and lead the large-scale vaccine trials necessary to protect and save lives.

You likely know Fred Hutch for its cancer research, but Hutch scientists have been studying viruses for as long as they’ve been studying cancer — because cancer and our bodies’ defenses against infection are so closely linked.

The Hutch’s infectious disease research has grown to encompass dozens of labs working across disciplines to reduce the burden of death and disease from infection. When the pandemic began, the Hutch was ready. They quickly deployed experts to work together — and with scientists and institutions around the world — to combat the coronavirus from every angle. Today, the Hutch is the coordinating body of the COVID-19 Prevention Network, which is quickly ramping up large-scale international vaccine trials worldwide. It is also a regional hub for additional vaccine trials and clinical studies of the virus and emerging treatments.

To confront the pandemic head on, Hutch researchers are:

• Discovering antibodies in people infected with the coronavirus to inform new therapeutics and vaccines.
• Following health care workers, first responders, and others at high risk for the virus to gain detailed insight into how our bodies react from the earliest days of infection. 
• Working to reduce the pandemic's disproportionate effect on communities of color and address the health inequities that contribute. 
• Leading massive, international vaccine trials as part of the U.S. government’s Operation Warp Speed, a monumental effort to test, develop, and distribute safe and effective coronavirus vaccines in record time.
• Opening the COVID-19 Clinical Research Center at Fred Hutch, a regional hub for vaccine trials and clinical studies of the virus and emerging treatments.
