The Hutch’s infectious disease research, rooted in decades of treating immunosuppressed cancer patients, has grown to encompass dozens of labs working across disciplines to reduce the burden of death and disease from infection. This deep expertise is an invaluable strength as the Hutch’s extraordinary scientists work with partners around the world to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

To confront the pandemic head on, Hutch researchers are: 

  • Developing and evaluating rapid testing and point-of-care tests to increase availability and speed results.
  • Studying antibodies in people infected with the coronavirus to inform new therapeutics and vaccines.
  • Conducting clinical trials of already-approved antiviral drugs and novel agents. 
  • Developing vaccines that will provide lifetime protection no matter how many times the virus mutates. 
  • Studying how coronaviruses evolve to improve the ability of our immune system to defend against them.
